For the past two days I have been back at work. I am more tired than I remembered was possible but it feels good to be a doctor again. Medicine, and obstetrics in particular, gets under your skin. I think of it more as a way of life than a job. It’s only now that I’m back that I can remember how much I love delivering babies and I can’t even imagine ever wanting to be anything other than an obstetrician. It’s still the best job in the world!
At the same time, I am quickly discovering that I am not the same doctor that I was three months ago when I became unwell. My experiences as a patient have permanently changed the way I practice medicine. I think it’s the little things that make the most difference. Little things aside, I am back on the shop floor and I love it. It is simply such a privilege to help women have babies.
On the downside, I am too tired to invent cupcakes or play with my scrapbook tonight! For foodie inspiration, check out the splendid beetroot recipes submitted for Beet n Squash U! over at She Simmers and Bouchon For Two.
The four winners were warm salad with parmesan dressing, braised beef with beets, uncommonly delicious beet puffs and roasted beet and ginger risotto. They all look amazing! I think I will try the risotto first. Next month’s vegetable is fennel. Sadly, I’m not convinced that fennel biscuits or cupcakes would be a good idea. I may have to (try) and be more grown up about this one. Fennel experiment disasters will start this weekend!

Glad you are able to go back to work. Its important. Take care of yourself though
It’s true, perspective changes everything. Glad to know you are well, a better doctor for the experience and ready to tackle fennel!
I grow it in my garden and have only found it to be good in Nicoise Salad, prepped like sliced celery. mmm… I’ll be thinking. – ooo maybe as a simple infusion, that could be good.
I am glad you are well and back to helping bring about the miracle of life! Take care of you, though.
I am also happy to hear that your experience, though I am sure it was hard being sick, has had a positive effect on the way you practice medicine.
Stopping by from SITS!
