Indonesian tea party

One of my favourite shopping discoveries is an Asian supermarket in Greenwich. I suspect it may actually be some kind of time machine: I swear I am only in there for half an hour, but by the time I leave most of the day has disappeared. They have whole aisles full of literally hundreds of varieties of sweet chilli sauce! The fruit and vegetable selection is amazing, there’s a bakery with a delightful selection of cakes and downstairs there’s a fascinating array of fish tanks with the most enormous lobsters in the world. I treat shopping trips there as a day out! What I find particularly exciting is the selection of Indonesian food, which can be surprisingly difficult to find in London.

I was introduced to Indonesian food on a trip to Java and Bali a couple of years ago and have been addicted ever since. I love the vibrant colours and the sweet spiciness of many of the dishes. I have not yet been brave enough to try any Indonesian recipes from scratch, but some of the spice mixes available at my magic supermarket have produced some really tasty results. So, after drooling over photographs of Indonesian food, we had an Indonesian tea party! Here are some of the wonderful dishes I enjoyed in Indonesia:

And now, here is our attempt. I was so excited to find the banana leaves to make the plate; unfortunately my efforts at making little bowls with banana leaves and cocktail sticks all failed dismally!

Just for a moment, I almost believed that there was a tropical paradise outside, rather than cold, wet and windy London!
